WINCHESTER - MODEL 21 GRAND AMERICAN 2 BARREL SET
28 Gauge & .410
A Collector's Masterpiece
In the world of fine American shotguns, few names evoke the level of craftsmanship and prestige as Winchester’s legendary Model 21. Among its variants, the Model 21 Grand American stands as a testament to the pinnacle of American gunmaking. This particular example, a two-barrel set in 28 gauge and .410, holds a unique place in the pantheon of bespoke firearms, having been made for the renowned collector and publishing magnate, Robert Petersen. Finished in 1996, this gun is more than just an instrument of sport; it is a masterpiece of artistry, engineering, and legacy.
Robert Petersen, a name synonymous with publishing and firearms collecting, was known for his discerning eye for the exceptional. As the founder of Hot Rod and Guns & Ammo magazines, Petersen had a profound appreciation for the finest examples of firearm craftsmanship. This particular Model 21 was custom-built to his exacting standards, combining Winchester’s storied tradition with the modern advancements and aesthetic details of the Grand American series.
This two-barrel set is a stunning example of Winchester’s commitment to quality. The 28-gauge barrels measure 26 inches and feature a vent rib with Improved Cylinder and Modified chokes, paired with 2 ¾-inch chambers. Complementing these are the .410 barrels, also 26 inches with a vent rib, choked Skeet and Skeet, and equipped with 3-inch chambers. This versatility in barrel configurations makes the gun equally at home on the skeet range or in the field.
The gun’s mechanics are flawless, with a single selective trigger and automatic ejectors ensuring reliable operation. The inclusion of a beavertail forearm and a gracefully contoured pistol grip not only enhances the gun’s handling but also adds to its visual appeal. The stock is capped with a beautifully checkered butt, balancing tradition with modern ergonomics. At 7 pounds, 6 ounces, the gun is well-proportioned for smooth swings and steady aiming, while the dimensions of 2 ¼-inch drop at heel (DAH), 1 ½-inch drop at comb (DAC), and 14 ¼-inch length of pull (LOP) provide an accommodating fit.
