PART 1: The Storied History of Holland & Holland:
In the annals of British gunmaking, few names resonate with as much prestige and tradition as Holland & Holland. Founded in the early 19th century, this venerable institution has become synonymous with craftsmanship, innovation, and excellence. In this two-part essay, we delve into the rich history of Holland & Holland, tracing its origins, milestones, and the indelible mark it has left on the world of fine firearms.
Holland & Holland's story begins in 1835 with the establishment of the company by Harris Holland. Born in 1806 in London, Harris's background is somewhat enigmatic, though it is believed that his father was an organ builder. His success in this trade allowed him to indulge in his passion for shooting, a pastime that would eventually shape his future.
As Harris Holland became a familiar figure at various pigeon shoots and grouse moors in Yorkshire, his interest in firearms grew. The exact date when he started producing guns is unclear, but it is estimated to be in the 1850s. Unlike many of his contemporaries who apprenticed under established gunmakers, Harris's foray into gunmaking was largely self-directed, making his achievements even more remarkable.
