Part 1: The Heritage of Craftsmanship: William Evans and the Art of London Gunmaking
In the annals of London's storied gunmaking history, few names resonate with the rich heritage and enduring legacy of William Evans. This iconic brand, a beacon of craftsmanship and innovation, began its journey in 1883, but the seeds of its inception were sown in the skilled hands of its founder, William Evans, long before. Evans, honing his craft under the auspices of the legendary James Purdey and subsequently Holland & Holland, represented the epitome of a burgeoning era in gunmaking.
The establishment of William Evans’s own gunmaking firm at 95a Buckingham Palace Road marked not just the birth of a brand but the embodiment of a dream. Crafting his guns under the moniker "William Evans (From Purdey's)" was a nod to their exceptional quality, a practice that swiftly garnered attention and respect in the tight-knit circles of London's shooting fraternity. Evans's entry into the trade coincided with the advent of the breech-loading era, a technological revolution that he embraced with a variety of gun and rifle types to cater to a broad spectrum of clients.
William Evans’s initial success at Buckingham Palace Road was only the beginning. The firm’s relocation to various premises, including 4 Holden Terrace and eventually 63 Pall Mall, signified not just physical growth but an expanding reputation amongst the upper echelons of British society. The proximity to the Scots Guards' barracks during World War I provided an opportunity for the company to contribute to the war effort, outfitting sniper rifles for the regiment. This period underscored Evans’s ability to balance the demands of wartime production with the maintenance of quality in civilian firearms.
